Introduction About La Liga

The first division is commonly known as La Liga also known as La Liga Santander. The name La-Liga Santander is known because of sponsorship reasons with Santander. La Liga is a professional association football division of the Spanish football league system. La Liga is administered by the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP). This Spanish football league consists of 20 football teams. This football league was founded in the year 1929. This league comes under the confederation UEFA. This league operates a system of promotion and relegation.

Form starting of this league foundation till now 60 teams have completed their participation. Nine teams have been crowned champions, with Real Madrid team winning the title for 33 times and Barcelona team winning the title for 24 times. In the early years of league, Atletico Bilbao team has won several titles but Real Madrid dominated the championship. From 1990s onwards Barcelona won 14 titles, Real Madrid won 9 titles, La Liga also saw other champions which include Atletico Madrid, Deportivo de La Coruna, and Valencia.

The idea of this La-Liga foundation was first proposed by Jose Maria Acha, director of Arenas Club de Getxo in April 1927. After so many discussions about the size of the league and who would participate in the league, the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol eventually agreed to allow 10 teams to form the first Primera Division in 1929. The teams Real Madrid, Real union, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Arenas Club de Getxo and Real Sociedad were all selected as previous winners of the Copa del Rey.

La Liga Competition Format

The competition format of La Liga follows the usual double round-robin format. Each team plays 38 matches during the season. They play twice in the club once at home and once away. If the team wins they will be awarded 3 points, 1 point for draw match and 0 points for loss match. The La Liga ranks its teams with highest rank club with the base of points. At the end of the season the last three teams are relegated to Segunda Division and the top two teams from Segunda division are promoted to La Liga.

Promotion and Relegation

As La Liga competition runs on the basis of a system of promotion and relegation, this system exists between the Segunda Divison and Primeria Division. The three lowest ranked teams in LaLiga are relegated to the Segunda Division, and the top 2 teams of the Segunda Division are promoted to Primeria Division and an additional club promoted after a series of play-offs involving the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs.
